The Great American Werewolf Story
“Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.”
This is the first few pages of a werewolf screenplay I wrote – kind of. This was originally the first scene, but I changed it, and now I am changing it back because I like this scene better. I might have the other scene in the interactive novel version of the story.
There is a segment in the middle of the script I want to rewrite too, but overall, I like this script. I have always had an interest in werewolves. The Wolfman was my favorite classic movie monster when I was a kid. I loved the movie An American Werewolf in London and watched it multiple times. It even inspired the title of my screenplay: The Great American Werewolf Story. What is your favorite classic monster? What is your favorite werewolf movie?
INT. POOL HALL - NIGHT
RANDY (50’s) misses an easy pool shot.
RANDY
It’s your shot.
We see the silhouette of a man. He hides in the darkness of the bar. He walks out of the shadows and steps into the light of the dimly lit bar.
The man is Sampson. He is in his thirties, but his face makes him look older. His face is worn and torn from a hard life. It may be too much booze or too many women. Who knows?
His eyes tell a different story. His eyes look like those of a compassionate man who has lost hope and reason to live.
Sampson examines the pool table looking for a shot. This could be the winning shot, but it seems like a ball blocks him everywhere he looks.
Some BAR PATRONS have gathered around to watch this shot. The room is silent.
Sampson grips the pool stick. His forehead drips with beads of sweat. Sampson strikes and does an excellent massie shot. The cue ball curves around and dunks the eight ball in the corner pocket.
The bar cheers. The tension releases, and Randy gives Sampson the money he owes him.
Sampson grins. He looks at the television in the bar as a country music video plays. The singer singing in the video is CHUCK SWEET (40’s). He is strutting his stuff but looks like a real jerk. Sampson snarls and stops watching.
SAMPSON
I’m done—time for me to leave.
RANDY
You won’t give me a chance to win my money back?
SAMPSON
No.
RANDY
Jerk.
SAMPSON
It is better for all of you if I leave. It will be dark soon.
RANDY
Your carriage going to change into a pumpkin or something if you don’t get back home by midnight?
SAMPSON
Don’t make me angry.
RANDY
Why is that?
SAMPSON
You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.
RANDY
You Lou Ferrigno now?
Sampson grips the pool stick.
SAMPSON
For you... One more game.
Sampson stares at Randy and takes a sniff.
RANDY
What are you doing?
SAMPSON
Just getting a good smell and look at you.
RANDY
What’s that supposed to mean?
Sampson smiles and stares.
RANDY (CONT’D)
You’re weird.
INT. RANDY’S CAR - NIGHT
Randy smokes a cigar as he searches for a station on the radio. Snow gently hits the windshield of the car. He barely has the window cracked for his cigar smoke because it is cold outside. The car begins to fill with smoke, and Randy has no luck finding a radio station.
RANDY
Damn cold.
Randy coughs and spits some snot on the floorboard. He drives down a dark and lonely road.
RANDY (CONT’D)
Damn cigars.
Randy coughs again.
RANDY (CONT’D)
Shit... Damn cigars...
Randy takes another puff. He coughs again.
RANDY (CONT’D)
Damn! These cigars are going to be the death of me... But I love’em. I love’em. I love’em...
He coughs again. It is hard to see. The car is full of smoke.
RANDY (CONT’D)
Damn! Can’t see shit...
He wipes the windshield with his hand, but it just seems to make it worse.
RANDY (CONT’D)
Damn.
He coughs and chokes and hacks up some more phlegm. He throws the cigar out the window. He sees something.... Something BIG. Something is standing in the middle of the road. Randy sees a WEREWOLF.
The werewolf stands in the middle of the road. He is unphased by the car heading straight toward him. The werewolf snarls. His teeth are sharp and large.
The werewolf howls. Randy pushes down the peddle of the gas.
He hits the werewolf head-on. The werewolf slides down the side of the snowy hill. Randy’s car flips and slides down the other side of the hill.
Randy’s car is flipped on its side.
RANDY (CONT’D)
What in the hell was that thing? It sure wasn’t a deer.
Randy crawls out of the car. He slips and falls on the snow.
RANDY (CONT’D)
Damn it.
EXT. SNOWY HILL - NIGHT
The werewolf’s limp, bloody body lies on the white snow on the other side of the hill. The werewolf’s wounds miraculously begin to heal. The werewolf opens his eyes. His eyes are yellow, and his gaze is scary.
EXT. SNOWY HILL - NIGHT
Randy stands in the middle of the snow on the other side of the hill. He is bruised and battered. He struggles to stand. He takes his cell phone out of his pocket. No reception.
RANDY
Damn, phone.
Randy hears a howl. Randy’s eyes widen. He is terrified. Snow falls on the ground. Randy runs toward the woods.
EXT. WOODS - NIGHT
Randy runs as fast as his fat ass can carry him, but he has to stop and take a few deep breaths. He grabs his chest. Snow gently falls to the ground. Randy hears a howl.
RANDY
No.
He hears another howl. This time it is closer. Randy looks around in all directions. He doesn’t see anything. He knows he is being watched but can’t see who or what is watching him. Something is circling him. Something is stalking him.
Randy’s face turns pale. He sees the werewolf, a colossal beast. He stands on all fours. He looks like a bat but is built like a giant gorilla.
His teeth are sharp and large. His face is angry and disgusted as he snarls and shows his massive teeth.
RANDY (CONT’D)
Damn.
The werewolf leaps forward and takes a bite out of Randy’s chest. Randy yells as the werewolf devours him. He hits the werewolf in the face, but the werewolf is too strong. The werewolf eats him like he is at an all-you-can-eat buffet.
EXT. FIELD - MORNING
Sampson wakes up nude in a field of snow. The sun shines on his face. There is a slight breeze and an eerie silence.
Sampson rolls over and sees Randy’s ripped-up body beside him.
SAMPSON
I told you not to make me angry.
